Most burns are minor injuries that can occur anywhere, including at home or work. It is common to get a minor burn from such things as hot water, touching a hot iron, or lighting a match. Home treatment is usually all that is needed for healing these types of burns – cleaning and a first aid cream are recommended to prevent other problems, such as infection. What’s something exciting your business offers? Say it here.

What causes folliculitis?

  • Heat Burns (thermal burns), which can be caused by fire, hot objects, hot liquids, or even hot steam. The most common burns in adults & children are scalds from hot liquids.

  • Cold Temperature Burns can be caused by skin exposure to wet, cold, or windy conditions.
  • Electrical Burns can be caused by skin contact with electrical sources, like live electrical wires or plug outlets, or by lightning.

  • Chemical Burns, it is essential you know what is in every product you buy – especially if you have children around. Natural foods, such as chili peppers, can also cause a burning sensation because they contain a substance that irritates the skin.
  • Radiation Burns can be caused by the sun, sunlamps, tanning booths, X-rays, or radiation treatment for cancer.

  • Friction Burns can be caused when skin contacts any solid surface, such as roads (“road rash”), carpets, or gym floor surfaces. Usually, a friction burn gives you both a scrape (abrasion) and a heat burn.

Breathing in hot air or gases can injure your lungs and cause inhalation injuries. Breathing in toxic gases, such as carbon monoxide, can cause poisoning.

Burns can injure the skin layers and may also injure other parts of the body, such as muscles, blood vessels, nerves, lungs, and eyes.

Burns are defined as first, second, third, & fourth degree. The degree of the burn is categorized depending on how many layers of skin & tissue are burned. The deeper the burn and the larger the burned area, the more serious the burn is.

First Degree Burns are burns of the first layer of skin.

There are two types of Second-Degree Burns:

  • Superficial burns injure the first and second layers of skin.
  • Deep burns injure deeper skin layers.

Third Degree Burns (full-thickness burns) may injure all the skin layers and tissue under the skin. These burns always require medical treatment.

Fourth Degree Burns usually extend through the skin to injure muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves, blood vessels, and bones. These burns always require medical treatment.

How serious a burn is defined depends on several factors, including:

  • The depth, size, cause, affected body area, age, and health of the burn victim.
  • Any other injuries that occurred, and the need for follow-up care.
  • Burns affect people of all ages, though some are at higher risk than others. In children younger than age 5 most burns are scald burns from hot liquids. Older adults are at a higher risk for burns, mostly scald burns from hot liquids & men are twice as likely to have burn injuries as women.

Sunburns

A Sunburn is skin damage from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Most sunburns cause mild pain and redness but affect only the outer layer of the skin. This is classified as a first-degree burn. These sunburns are mild and can usually be treated at home.

Your skin type can help determine how easily you can become sunburned. People with fair or freckled skin, blond or red hair, and blue eyes usually sunburn easily. Your age also affects how your skin reacts to the sun. The skin of children younger than six and adults older than 60 is more sensitive to sunlight.

There is little you can do to stop the skin from peeling after a sunburn; it’s part of the healing process.

Lotion may help relieve the itching.
