Too much exposure to the sun is one of the main reasons people get (strong) skin cancer(/strong). In fact, more than 90% of all skin cancers occur on parts of the body that typically get the most sun exposure, such as the face, neck, ears, hands, and arms.
Overexposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays (UV rays) causes skin cancer and can be prevented by applying the correct amount of sunscreen when you know you will be exposed to the sun. Just as dangerous as the sun are UV rays from artificial sources, such as tanning beds and sunlamps.
The three main types of skin cancer are basal cell cancer, squamous cell cancer, and melanoma. In the Skin Cancer Section of this website, we briefly discuss the ABCDE system as a guide to detecting signs of skin cancer in moles or other skin growths.
People with skin types that burn easily and do not tan are at the highest risk for skin cancers, and anyone who has had severe sunburns or many sunburns is at high risk for skin cancers.
Sun Damage
The sunlight that reaches the earth has ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B (UVA and UVB) rays. These UV rays from the sun are the leading cause of skin damage. UVA and UVB rays affect the skin’s sensitivity to sun exposure differently.
