What Is Actinic Keratosis?

Actinic Keratosis is a lesion on the outer skin layer caused by too much exposure to the ultraviolet rays of sunlight.

They can also be an indication of the beginning of skin cancer. Typically, they appear in people over the age of 40; however, in some areas with a right here in Southern California, these lesions occur in much younger people. The most likely candidates for Actinic Keratosis are people with fair skin, blond or red hair, and blue or green eyes.

You know you have this condition if you have developed rough, scaly patches on your skin (called keratosis). A history of sunburn can also increase the risk of getting actinic keratosis.

The main thing to remember is that if not properly treated, although unusual, these patches can develop into a more serious form of skin cancer. Below are some steps you can take to reduce your exposure to actinic keratosis:

Steps to Reduce Exposure

  • Avoid exposure to sunlight during peak sunlight hours (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.).
  • Wear clothing that covers arms and legs.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat that protects the ears — not just a cap.
  • Carry an umbrella when outdoors during peak sunlight hours.

Steps to Reduce Exposure

  •  Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher, applying it at least 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure.
  • Choose a sunscreen labeled “broad-spectrum,” or that states it provides both UVA and UVB protection.
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours when outdoors, even on cloudy days.
  • Reapply sunscreen more frequently than every two hours if you are sweating, and reapply sunscreen immediately after getting out of the water.
  • Remember that it is the light from the sun that can be dangerous — not the heat — so you can be at risk even if the temperature is mild.

I'm so glad to have found Advanced Dermatology. I had some flareups so I needed to see a dermatologist. I was also on vacation also so it was convenient for me to see a specialist while I was in PS.
