What is folliculitis?
Folliculitis is an infection in the hair follicles and can occur in any place where you have hair. Every piece of hair on your body grows out of a tiny pouch called a follicle. Folliculitis is when those pouches get infected and most often occur in the face and scalp and areas rubbed by clothing, like the thighs, knees, and groin areas.
What causes folliculitis?
Bacteria usually cause folliculitis, but it can also be caused by yeast or another type of fungus. Some ways that you can get folliculitis include if you have damaged hair follicles, by shaving or wearing clothes that rub the skin and can irritate the follicles. Another common reason for the onset of folliculitis happens when they become blocked or irritated by sweat, machine oils, or makeup.

What are the symptoms?
Folliculitis usually looks like red pimples with hair in the center of each one. The pimples may have pus in them and itch or burn. When the pimples break open, they may drain pus, blood, or both.
In about 72 hours after you have been in a hot tub, you may experience "Hot tub folliculitis" – this where many small pimples appear on your stomach and sometimes on your arms and legs. You may also have a mild fever and an upset stomach; this kind of folliculitis usually goes away on its own in 7 to 10 days.
How is folliculitis diagnosed?
Call Us! At Advanced Dermatology & Skin Cancer Specialists, our dermatology experts will check your skin and ask about your recent health issues and the activities you have experienced. We may do tests to determine what is causing your folliculitis and to ensure you don't have a different problem like a heat rash. Testing a sample of the fluid in the pimples or a sample of tissue can help our doctors learn what is causing the infection.
