What is Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is dark spots on the skin which is caused by the production of excess melanin. It is often called age spots, liver spots, freckles, and sunspots and there are several treatments available to reduce or remove the darker skin. Most commonly, dark spots are seen on the face, arms, and hands.
Some common causes of skin hyperpigmentation include:
- Sun exposure
- Hormonal changes
- Heredity
- Acne
- Botched skin treatments
Typically, hyperpigmentation is a harmless skin condition, however, if moles or other signs of skin cancer appear, you should have it checked by a dermatologist.
Treatment for Hyperpigmentation:
IPL (Photo Facial) - Many doctors use intense pulsed light, or a Photo facial to treat hyperpigmentation. However, if it is improperly administered IPL treatment can make hyperpigmentation worse, contact us for a more detailed discussion on this process.
Chemical Peel - A TCA peel or deeper phenol peel can also be used to treat hyperpigmentation; however, it is important that special care be taken because if it is not correctly, pigment irregularities and scarring can occur.
Laser Peel - A variety of laser resurfacing treatments may be performed to reduce hyperpigmentation. CO2 lasers and fractional lasers are popular choices for skin resurfacing.
Topical Skin Lightening Products - Products containing skin-lightening ingredients, such as Vitamin C, Retinoids, and hydroquinone can often be used to reduce hyperpigmentation.
