What Is Scabies?

Scabies is a condition of very itchy skin caused by tiny mites that burrow into your skin and trigger an allergic reaction. Scabies is highly contagious, spread from person to person, and can affect people of all ages and from all income levels, social backgrounds, and living situations.

With treatment, the scabies mites die, and the itching goes away in days to weeks. Without treatment, the mites continue to reproduce under the skin, causing more sores and itching.

How is Scabies spread?

Scabies mites spread from person to person through close contact, such as sleeping in the same bed or touching someone’s skin, and can also spread through sharing towels, clothing, and other personal items.

What are the symptoms of Scabies?
Scabies has two main symptoms:

  • Severe itching, usually worse at night; this itching is more pronounced in small children and older adults.
  • A rash with tiny blisters or sores.

Symptoms are more likely to occur:

The first time you have Scabies, it may take several weeks to see the symptoms; however, the more you have scabies, the quicker you see the symptoms.

  • Between the fingers and on the palm side of the wrists
  • On the outside surfaces of the elbows and in the armpits
  • Around the waistline and navel
  • On the buttocks
  • Around the nipples
  • On the genitals

Also, skin irritation may occur on the scalp, neck, face, and on palms of the hands, and soles of the feet. In babies and small children. If you have many scaly, crusted sores, you may have a rare form of scabies called crusted scabies (Norwegian scabies).

The first time you have Scabies, it may take several weeks to see the symptoms; however, the more you have scabies, the quicker you see the symptoms.

How is scabies diagnosed?

Typically, your doctor will diagnose Scabies on your body. Sometimes you may need a test to confirm that you have scabies. This test involves gently scraping some dry skin from an affected area and looking at it under a microscope for signs of mites.

How is scabies treated?
Scabies won’t go away on its own! If you have any of the symptoms listed above, Call Us! Our dermatology specialists will diagnose it and immediately begin treatment so that you do not spread it to your home and family.

To get rid of it, you need to use a special prescribed cream or lotion that contains permethrin or another medicine. In severe cases, we may also prescribe pills to take.
