The staff at Advanced Dermatology & Skin Cancer Specialists has over 40 years of combined experience in medical dermatology, and we are constantly working to perfect treatment and achieve positive outcomes for all types of skin cancers. We are now proud to offer our patients SRT Treatments for some cancers – Superficial Radiation Therapy, Radiotherapy for Basal Cell Carcinoma, and Radiotherapy for Cancer.
SRT – Superficial Radiation Therapy – is a new form of radiation therapy available to treat most skin cancers, such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and Bowen’s carcinoma. This procedure eliminates cutting and stitches, as used in Mohs surgery. Recovery is faster, and in most cases, you leave the office without disrupting your daily life.
We are proud to be among the first dermatology practices to make it available to patients at our Southern California offices.
This procedure treats tumors in sensitive areas of the nose, lips, ears, eyes, and forehead, and has been shown to be excellent for the lower extremities. SRT is a great alternative for treating Skin Cancer in the legs, which do not heal easily.
SRT preserves the surrounding healthy tissue while painlessly treating the malignant (cancerous) cells. One key benefit of using SRT to treat skin cancer is that it usually penetrates only the thickness of the skin, which is about 5mm below the skin’s surface.
Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT) uses low-energy X-rays to kill affected skin cells and can be safely performed in a dermatology office.
Using ultrasound images, the doctor targets the exact size and area to deliver the precise radiation dose in the top layer of the skin.
Since no surgery is involved, recovery is relatively easy. In most cases, there is minimal to no scarring, pain, or the need for stitches.
The patient returns to their normal life without any inconvenience. A great benefit is that there are no stitches or unsightly skin blemishes.
Image-guided Superficial Radiation Therapy is a great way to treat the diagnosis of non-melanoma Skin Cancers such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and Bowen’s carcinoma.
SRT is a low-dose, pain-free treatment that doesn’t require cutting and stitches and has little to no scarring. In most cases, the patient returns to their normal life without any side effects.
Proven Effective: Cure rates are like surgery, with fewer side effects and shorter treatment times.
No Surgery: No Cutting, No Stitching, No Bleeding, No Scarring, and Limited to No Pain.
No Hospitalization: Treatment is done in the office at one of our convenient locations throughout Southern California.
Minimal or No Scaring: SRT treatment has no stitches and therefore typically produces an outstanding appearance of the treatment site.
Convenient: Treatment is delivered in the office over 15-20 10-minute sessions. There are minimal side effects and little to no wound care, which allows you to return to your daily life when you leave the office.
SRT Uses Low-Energy X-rays: SRT uses radiation levels similar to those used at your dentist’s office when they take X-rays. Treatment is safe and effective. The radiation goes only as deep as your skin and doesn’t affect any other body part.
Great Results: People who have SRT treatments report satisfaction 99% of the time. The process is non-invasive, has no downtime, leaves no scarring, requires no wound care, can be performed in the dermatology office (no hospitalization), and allows the patient to return to their life when they leave the office!
The process begins with diagnosing the cancer to ensure it can be treated with SRT.
Once diagnosed, you will meet with our Radiation Oncologist and Radiation Therapist to discuss and review what was diagnosed and your medical history.
Based on the findings, our medical team will determine the ideal number of treatments to minimize side effects and optimize cosmetic outcomes. You can expect to receive between 15-20 treatments.
Once this is accomplished, our Radiation Therapist will contact you to schedule the start of treatment.
Our in-house board-certified Radiation Oncologist will curate your treatment plan based on your tumor size and location.
During each treatment, an applicator is placed near or on the lesion, and treatment is administered.
Each treatment takes between 5-10 minutes.
A physician or physician assistant will be present throughout each treatment to monitor you and manage any side effects.
Please note that side effects are usually minimal and transient and may include skin redness, itching in the affected area, and, very rarely, fatigue.
At Advanced Dermatology & Skin Cancer Specialists, we are committed to providing compassionate care for all our patients. We understand that skin cancer can be a sensitive topic, and we strive to create a safe, supportive environment for our patients.
At Advanced Dermatology & Skin Cancer Specialists, we use established techniques refined over several decades to treat our patients diagnosed with skin cancer. SRT Radiotherapies have proven to be an extremely effective way to treat early-stage skin cancer.

Dr. Jason Roddick was very Thoreau when he explained the difference between melanoma and moles. He showed us pictures so that we had a clear understanding of what to look for.
Very professional and very thorough. Had great experiences and surgeries with them.
